SO NICE TO WAKE UP

So nice to wake up today and know that in more than a few States in the Union one can be fired for smoking at home. One can be fired for displaying a sign supporting a candidate that your employer does not want to support.

So nice to wake up today and know that the Shrub has nominated Sammy Alito who is sure to distract and if given the opportunity end a woman's right to choose. See above. We're almost there anyway.

So nice to wake up today and know that Rove still has security clearance. Makes me sleep so much better.

So nice to wake up and know that the Gulf Coast is still a mess.

So nice to wake up and know that my friend in Ft. Lauderdale still does not have power one week after Wilma.

So nice to wake up and know that tomorrow Judge C.W. Duncan Jr will hear the motion to remove Judge Perkins from hearing the case against Tom DeLay. All will be revealed.

So nice to wake up and know that "approximately" 36 Iraqis civilians will die in Iraq today. Approximately?

So nice to wake up and know that it's politics as usual.

So nice to wake up and know that another child will be left behind, but will be tested to death in the process.

So nice to wake up and know that voices are still being raised, authority is still being questioned and Esther can make a dance record and get everyone to believe that it is just like the second coming.

So nice to wake up.

And know.

You can fool a lot of the people a lot of the time.

Especially when your name is George.

GAME PLAN

Miers steps aside.

Consider raising threat level.

Press on with usual talking points. Perjury is just a technicality.

Nominate Priscilla Owen for Supremes.

Press on with usual talking points. President never spoke to Karl Rove.

Raise terror level.

Press on with usual talking points. President didn't know Dick Cheney was Vice President.

Give a "MAJOR" speech on Iraq. Job well done and all that stuff.

Press on with usual talking points. President was on vacation, didn't know we were going to war.

Send Laura out to do battle.

Press on with usual talking points. President will be exercising for the balance of his term.

DO NOT DISTURB

Press on with usual talking points. Bill Clinton received a BLOW JOB in the Oval Office.

Start war with Syria.

Press on with usual talking points. If we had not taken prayer out of schools none of this would have happened.

And if all else fails.....

Press on with usual talking points. Keep lying.

QUESTIONS ANSWERED

I had to sleep in late this morning due to the extra inning game last night. That and I'm a tad upset about the outcome. Of course "barking dog" was not going to let me rest for long, so I gave up and got up!

A few of you wanted to know how the collage was created. While I'd love to be equipped with the technical skills to create a collage I have to give it all to: http://picasa.google.com/index.html

This is a free program, easy to download and fun to use. You can do all sorts of stuff with any photos you have on your computer. It's easy to use and it works very nicely with blogger.com!

Woodstock asked if I had scored tickets for a World Series game here in Houston. Nope, NSL*. Those shots of Minute Maid were taken earlier this season.

I was lucky enough to go to several World Series games when I lived in Los Angeles and was a huge Los Angeles Dodger fan. For my first World Series game , the only seats we (HD and I) were able to score were in the bleachers. This meant that you were literally sitting in left field watching the backs of the players and at least 600 feet from home plate. The highlight of that game? Linda Rondstadt singing the National Anthem!

Thus far I have been disappointed and excited about what great baseball I have seen in this World Series. As I said last night, no one has sung yet. It ain't over till it is over.

I have been enjoying my time in this alternate reality, no matter what the outcome!

WHILE WAITING FOR GAME 3.....

While waiting for Game 3 I am reminded that stupidity and hatred are alive and well. This is not to say that I feel the KKK should be denied the right to meet and present their views. What I can not fathom is why anyone would want to be in the KKK. Wearing sheets is just so passe.

From KXAN.com in Austin Texas

The city has given permission of the Ku Klux Klan to hold a rally on Saturday, November 5.
The group says they want to have a pro-family values rally in front of City Hall that afternoon to get voters to vote against gay marriage.

The city has reserved the Austin City Hall's south plaza on Lavaca and Cesar Chavez from 1-3 pm on Saturday, November 5.

In an e-mail to the city for permission, a representative for the American White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan wrote:
"Our speech will not be inflammatory, but we all know the reputation of the name of the KKK, so we expect anti-Klan demonstrators to be there who may become violent. We certainly don't want any of our people hurt nor any city officials. We just want to come and encourage people to vote for Christian Family Values and against legalized homosexual marriage in the state of Texas."

What a crock!

All IT TAKES.....

Another amazing evening of baseball at its finest.

Another loss.

My boys played really hard tonight.

They met the challenge.

Down by 2 runs they battled back.

All it takes is one run in the bottom of the 9th inning and it's over.

Onward to Houston.

Climate controlled.

Hometown fans for my Hometown heroes.

Amazing baseball.

Go Astros.

AT IT'S BEST

I don't like to lose, but last nights game was really great baseball. One of the things I love about baseball is just that. Baseball. I love the team aspect. I love that one person can make a difference, but if that one person plays as part of a team they can enable the team to win.

Baseball to me is about a work ethic, knowledge, and a joy in participating.

Sorry the Rocket wasn't up to it last night. He was the second oldest pitcher to start a World Series game! He's only 43! The head coach of the Sox, who is 41 said that his managing staff has had more at bats with the Rocket then his current players! I love that!

Well, here's where I burst in to several choruses of You Gotta Have Heart and get myself together for Game 2 this evening!

Go Astros!

WHAT I WON'T BE WEARING!

That's me on the left in case you were wondering.

Laura, who outside of RQM is my oldest friend, is in the middle.

On the right is the love of my life, George.

A lot of look no?

I haven't a clue what I'll be wearing this evening. Jeans and a smart black polo most likely, since that is my uniform of choice these days.

Whatever I wear, rest assured I'll be rocking. And by the way...thanks for putting up with all this baseball madness. I know lots of folks could care less, but c'est mon vie!

GAME FACE

I am keeping it simple.

Nothing fancy.

Basics.

That's how they won Game 5. They played using the basics. Hit and run, bunt, move the runners around. One solo home run.

Now if only that damn Wilma would lighten up.

HOW DO YOU SPELL RELIEF?

Nancy, you called it a couple of weeks ago!

RQM thanks, that was a blast.

I have nothing to wear on Saturday night!

GO ASTROS.

I'LL MARCH MY BAND OUT, I'LL BEAT MY DRUM!

Sublime made me do it!

http://americasoblivious.blogspot.com/

Actually she posted a great pic on her blog today. She and her brother are in costume, ready for Halloween.

It made me remember this photo. It's my sister and I, not dressed for Halloween, but modeling our Christmas presents.

We were living in Ada, Ohio when this picture was taken. Ada is the home of Ohio Northern University. During the football season I was fascinated with half time. I wanted to be a drum major!

My mother and father actually made those uniforms for my sister and for me!

Wish they were still on the planet so they could make me an Astros uniform and see the Astros move on to the World Series!

Go Astros.

WHERE'S FRED WHEN WE NEED HIM?

I do wish Fred would come and take Wilma back where she came from and we could put this hurricane season to bed without anyone else being displaced, disrupted or worse case, dead.

Yes, I'm nervous. Yes, I want to win tonight. Yes, I will watch the World Series even if the Astros don't make it. THEY ARE GOING TO MAKE IT.

We can't play PowerBall here in Texas. So good luck to all of you playing. You can't win if you don't play. That's why they call it gambling.

Still find it amazing that a blow job was some how more compelling, more of a crime, and received much more attention then intentionally lying to your constituency, outing a CIA operative, and buying and selling votes.

But wait, back to baseball.

I'm calling Fred now and asking him to pick up Wilma.

Go Astros.

EXCUSE ME, WHY DID YOU PITCH TO HIM?

Okay, the fat lady hasn't sung (and why is it a fat lady and not a fat man and furthermore why are they fat anyway?)

I'm in shock and can't imagine watching on Wednesday as we try and win what should have been ours this evening. I'm annoyed with Garner for allowing Lidge to pitch to Pujols and not walk him and then pitch to Sanders. What was going on?

For those of you who don't follow this stuff, bear with me. I could join your ranks any day now. And no, I'm not a fair weather fan, but I am a fan that demands my team play ball. What I saw this evening was a team lose their concentration cause they thought they had won it and they hadn't.

It isn't over till it's over. And that doesn't happen if you don't get them out.

Yikes.

Go Astros.

AH BASEBALL

Getting ready for Game 5 tonight. Excited and really really nervous.

45 years in the making. Hope it happens here in town.

I was there when they were the Colt 45's and we played outside in a field of mosquitoes. I was there when the Astrodome opened and during those years with the really hideous uniforms. I was there when they built Enron Field, which became Minute Maid Park.

I was watching last year.

I am ready. They are ready.

Perhaps history in the making.

Go Astros!

Go away Wilma!

GET A LIFE

I now know why some marriages fail. Someone is spending too much time in front of the TV.

Yesterday. Astros 2 Cards 1. Three more opportunities to seal the deal. Game Four tonight and with a win this evening....we could be on our way to play the Chicago White Sox in the World Series.

The Sox beating the Angels in a series marked with bizarre calls from the umps. Strike zones all over the place. In the end, the Sox came through and win their first shot at the World Series since 1959!

The Astros are one victory away from their first shot at the World Series EVER!

We'll see what happens tonight.

And for those of you interested, I had to turn my back to the TV and only listen to the last two outs of the 9th. I was way to nervous!

I LIVE FOR THIS STUFF

Rocket on the mound. We manage to score runs. We win.

We're up 2 games to 1.

Odd calls being made on the Left Coast. The White Sox have sure been getting the breaks from the umps. C'est baseball.

More today!

Yippee!

TWICE TODAY

Sitting here, minding my own biz, when the power goes out. No clear reason why. At first I think, this must be because Blogzie didn't post today. And then I think this will last for a minute or two and be done. Sure enough, the power returns briefly but then goes off again.

Outside, there is no weather to speak of. Sunny, coolish for Houston. I think maybe it might just be my building, but no, it is the entire complex. One of my "neighbors" who has never spoken to me says, is your power out? Yes. Oh she says, I thought I'd forgotten to pay my electric bill!

I call RQM in Florida to find out if there has been a nuclear attack.

Finally after about 50 minutes, the power is restored. Fine. Then about 15 minutes ago, the power went off again. Of course I looked online to see if I could find any information about what was going on (at least I looked while I had power!) and I could find nothing.

Then I think to myself...really STB, get a grip. You aren't in Pakistan. You aren't still living in a "shelter" because of Katrina or Rita. Just get a grip.

Okay. Grip established.

Then I start thinking about what is going on out there...outside of the world of baseball which I have immersed myself in completely and totally over the last few weeks.

This flu thing sure seems weird and a tad suspect I might add. What, threats of terrorism with terrorists aren't working? Maybe some bird flu will shake 'em up. Get 'em to stop thinking about Iraq and the high cost of fuel.

And while were at it, let's not forget who's in charge at the top, and I'm not talking the Shrub here. I'm talking about those in power at FEMA and Health and Human Services who would have to handle this crisis of bird flu. Does anyone think these people are capable?

Then I think about Harry and wonder why she was put forward as a possibility for the Supremes. Does this have anything to do with the Special Prosecutor looking into the outing of a CIA agent. Seems that the story is heating up and taking on new dimensions. Jeez, would Karl stoop so low as to try and distract us with a half assed nominee for the court? Then we wouldn't focus on what he and Libby and possibly Cheney knew and did in the run up the Iraq war.

Then I think about all those people still living in hotels as a result of Katrina and Rita, who still don't have anything close to resembling a home to call home.

Then I think about the billion a week we are spending on a war that as far as I can tell only about 100 people really wanted us to have (and people I wouldn't sit down to dinner with I might add) and have to listen to bozo politicians telling us we need to cut spending to pay for the reconstruction of New Orleans. Jeez, a billion a month. How many cities could that build? How levees and bridges and roads could that repair? But, hey, let's cut Medicare drug benefits instead.

Then I think I better stop thinking and focus on baseball. What a wild game in Chicago. Missed that disputed call in the 9th. Then in St. Louis, prior to the game, Pettitte gets hit in the knee during batting practice. More to come tonight.

Yes Nancy, I am walking again. What a struggle to get back into it, but slowly and surely, I'm back on the plan. The amazing thing, and I've related this before, is how quickly one starts to feel so much better. Those endorphins!

Go Astros.

IS THE GAME STILL ON?

Years ago, while living in New York, we had house guests who were visiting. They were going out, we were watching the Mets and the Braves play on July 4, 1985. The game went 19 innings. When they returned from their outing, the first thing one of them said was, "Is the game still on?"

Well yesterday the Astros and the Braves played the longest game in Post Season history. 18 innings. 5 hours and 50 minutes. It was a thriller. Two grand slam home runs! One by each team. An amazing solo homer to tie up the game! The Rocket coming in as a reliever! Then a final home run to win the damn thing! AMAZING!

We did it!

Onward to St. Louis.

On a somber note, the tragedy happening in Pakistan, India and the surrounding regions weighs heavily.

SUBJECT TO WEATHER

It is amazing in 2005 that a "game" can be delayed or postponed due to weather. I love that. It is so totally low tech, in this high tech world we live in. Perhaps it is why I love to see the Green Bay Packers play in the dead of winter in really cold weather. It some how rings true.

Tonight the Astros have a chance to put it away as they say. Here in Houston, even with glorious weather, the boys played last night with the lid closed. Yes, we have a newish stadium (it was once called Enron Field!) and it has a retractable roof. Apparently the pitchers prefer to pitch with the roof closed. I think the fans love it as well because the sound is intensified 100 million times. It was fun to watch last night and to hear the crowd roar.....at least those in the crowd who weren't all their cellphones!

In the National League, the Cards beat the Padres in three...and no this isn't turning into a sports blog, but for those of you not caring or following, I figured I'd bring you up to speed. In the American League, the White Soxs also won in three.

Today and tonight we have two games. In the American League, the Yankees/Angeles game could decide who will play the White Sox for the division title. If the Astros beats the Braves today we will play the Cards for the National League divsion title. If we somehow come out on the other side of that series as victors we will play the American League winner.

Then it is the National League VS the American League aka The World Series.

I'd love to have the World Series here in Houston for a few games. I think all that energy is great for a city and Houston could use an infusion of positive, hopeful energy.

The Boys of Summer. Thanks Nancy for guiding me back!

NATIONAL LEAGUE PLAYOFF TEAMS
Houston Astros
St Louis Cardinals
San Diego Padres
Atlanta Braves

AMERICAN LEAGUE PLAYOFF TEAMS
Chicago White Sox (First win in playoff's since 1917!)

C'EST UN MIRACLE!

Note to myself.

It is October 7, 2005 and I am sitting in my living room with the window open. The temperature outside is 67 degrees. It is cooler outside than inside.

That said, we lost last night. Supposed to be the big "pitcher" battle. The Rocket vs. Smoltz. Well Smoltz blew us out of the water. The Rocket gave up five runs. Oh well. This means we can win here in Houston. Ah yes, civic pride.

So who is on first? Is it New York, with their own CIA, telling their citizens that there is a credible threat to the subway system (other then the hideous smells and the charming rats that populate said system?) Or is it the Federal Government saying there is no credible threat.

Is Karl gonna get it? Will Harry get confirmed? Will Anna Nicole Smith really appear at the Supreme Court? Will the Right just shut up about Tom DeLay and let the trials begin? (NO, I'll answer that myself.) Is it really Tom's baby? Will Nick and Jessica (who?) really split up? Will Brad marry Angelina? Will pigs fly? Will Anderson Cooper decide he loves older men and will he then ask me to move to Chelsea and spend the rest of my life with him? Will the Shrub admit he's back on the bottle?

Questions Questions Questions.

All Will Be Revealed.

Bon week-end...Tout le monde!

JUST HIT THE BALL BOYS

We did it. Won the first one in Atlanta. Thought it odd that the stadium wasn't full. What's up with that? Doesn't Atlanta like baseball anymore?

Having lived in Chicago years and years ago it is nice to see the WhiteSox having a great post season. And I love Ozzie Guillen's accent. That said, if the Astro's make it into the Series, I'm gonna have some problems!

Tonight it is the Rocket on the mound. Yes, Roger C. I know he and I wouldn't get along in real life, but I'm gonna be out there for him tonight. That's the thing about baseball. It still (almost) transcends politics. Or does it. Oh STB, leave that alone would ya!

Playoffs. Tradeoffs. Baseball. Politics.

I'm doing Baseball...almost!

BASEBALL

"I got it bad and that ain't good."

I am a lucky person. Lucky to have a forum, lucky to have my blogpals, lucky to be here. I know that, and I wouldn't want anyone to think that I don't have a perspective. Truly, I've got it good and that ain't bad. Thanks.

Yes, Nancy and I are going to watch the playoffs. They start today and lead to the World Series, which of course is the USA Series, but never mind.

The Astros managed to sneak their way in this year. We didn't have a stellar season. We had pitching, but we couldn't get runs on the board. Let's hope the determination we showed in the last month and a half comes through in the next 8 days.

So taking my cue and the great advice I receive from Blogland I'm shifting my focus. I'm going to continue to look outside and see what's what. I'm going to enjoy the coming days of baseball (and drive RQM crazy in the process, cause I get so nervous) and I'm going to keep blogging and keep reading and thanks Nancy (and everyone else I mentioned and forgot to mention yesterday) and onward we go.

I'll buy the popcorn and Cracker Jacks.

BACK TO LIFE BACK TO REALITY

Slowly I return to what is.

That damn dog who lives above me is barking again. Oy.

It's still hot in Houston. Yes, still hot and still humid.

I have been uninspired.

I have not been walking consistently for about three weeks. I go one day and then skip the next. Searching for the thread again so I can continue.

Tried of feeling anxious. Anxious about the weather. Anxious about where things are going. Anxious about being anxious.

Enjoying reading so much great stuff here in Blogland.

Freddy is amazing. Stephen as well. Inger and Woodstock and Blogzie. Connie Jane and RQM. Cracker and ATB and Nancy and Annie and DonDon. GMH getting better. People changing, Sublime and Kim. The Rude being rude for two years. Rosie for dancing on the roof. So many more that inspire me. So nice to have that. There are more, so many more, and it is nice to walk through the doors and find them.

I have decided to go back to work. I have had a wonderful two years or so taking time off and getting to enjoy myself. I realize though, that the coffers need filling, the brain needs further stimulation and that I need to expand my circle of real live friends.

No, I am not looking for a return to being a butler. I'm digging into the pre-butler years, and will seek a job utilizing my experience in the design world. We'll see what happens. I am sure it will be an adventure.

Back to life, back to reality.

Course I could win the lottery and we could all have a fab vacation in St. Tropez!
